Title: “Love That Neighbor”

LUKE 23 (NIV) The Crucifixion of Jesus
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”and to the hills, “Cover us!”

31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Wow…let me say that again: ”Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

-Remember: Jesus’ love isn’t just for the “good people!”

-The focus of the church is to love.

Matthew 22:34-40
The Greatest Commandment
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 5:43-48
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
**How do you view the person who has hurt you? Cheated you? Lied to you? Betrayed you?**

-You need to pray for those who hurt you…

*Notice how Jesus acts towards those who hurt him:*
John 13:18-38
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turnedagainst me.’

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

*Don’t forget the human side of Jesus! He was betrayed and denied! He was terrified to be crucified! He sweat blood, and cried out to God to remove this task of crucifixion from him…*

Of course it’s not natural to love the ones who hurt you. We naturally start to feel resentment towards them, but this is dangerous.

Keep in mind: Forgiving the one(s) who have hurt you does not mean that what they did is no big deal or excusable. There will be consequences for their actions. However, it is not up to you to try and give them what they deserve. Vengeance is the Lord’s job! (Romans 12:19)

Forgiveness:
1. It’s your choice!
-No one is forcing you to forgive…
-All of our decisions, big and small, are shaping our lives today.
-We don’t choose the bad things that happen to us; but we DO choose how we react to those things!

2. Try to see through Jesus’s eyes!
-Romans 5:6-8
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
-We all make mistakes…mistakes that hurt and affect other people in a negative way.
-Jesus saw beyond our mistakes!
*-Get your eyes off of the offense and onto the person! (This part really hit home for me…)

3. Forgiveness is a key to your happiness!
-Bitterness and anger keep you in a prison…
-So often we want someone else to fix their mistake and make things right with us.
-Unforgiveness poisons anyone who holds onto it! If you want to continue to enjoy life and experience the life that God has for you..you’ve got to know what it is to TRULY forgive!
-Matthew 6:14-15
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
-Go back to Luke 22…then remember what we read in Luke 23

…in the middle of your pain, in the middle of your suffering, “forgive them!!”

**Ummm I can’t really explain how bad I needed to hear this message. Of course it is not the easiest thing to accept when you realize you haven’t truly forgiven someone, but when you finally let go and give it to God…it feels amazing! Again, the part that really stuck out to me was to “get your eye off the offense and onto the person!” Stop dwelling on what happened to you. It’s over and done with. Now it is time to show love, just as Christ loved you and me! It’s not the nice and sweet thing to do, it is what we MUST do as Christians. If we do not forgive, God doesn’t forgive us! (Matthew 6:14-15) …And um, that is a terrifying thought. So why not on this Valentine’s day, show love to everyone- not just to the people who are easy to love and deserve it, but also to those who have hurt you! You will be blessed!**

*~Happy Valentine’s Day!!~*
